Description

1842-63 with some rebuilding. Dog-leg shaped breakwater/pier; 3100ft long. Coursed sandstone blocks with timber wharf along harbour-facing side. Battered base to pier surmounted by vertical walls; that to sea-facing side continued to form parapet; rebuilt in concrete along lower end; coursed stugged sandstone (inner face) with ridged coping towards end of pier. Sandstone kerb blocks partially intact to edge of platform; course of stugged projecting blocks immediately beneath support platform of wharf. Stone setts to parts of surface; otherwise concrete and asphalt (with remains of railway tracks).

Remains of single storey mid 20th century brick and concrete structure associated with shipment of coal or petroleum towards end of pier; counterbalanced equipment for discharging petrol and oil further along at edge of wharf. Large pipelines run most of length of pier along parapet wall.

Statement of Interest

Constructed for the Duke of Buccleuch as part of developments at Granton Harbour. A breakwater which also served as a pier with extensive wharfage. Formerly used for the shipment of coal, esparto grass and later petrol and oil. Lower section of pier altered by land reclamation between here and mid pier circa 1970.
