Description

J C Hay, 1880-82. 4-storey, 4-bay tenement, part of Scottish 17th century style terrace. Squared and snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. Base course; cornices above ground and 2nd floors; roll-moulded doorways; deep-set panelled doors; plate glass fanlight; chamfered reveals.

W (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: 3 doorways, with lvariety of roll-mouldings, flanked by single windows. Full-height canted window to outer left, corbelled to square at crowstepped gablehead with square blank tablet inset; dividing cornices. Semi-circular tower bay to outer right with tripartite windows to all floors; conical roof with cast-iron finial. Single windows in remaining bays; 3rd floor windows linked above eaves by Dutch gable, with decorative shield supported by bracketted cornice, rising to corniced stack. Pedimented and bracketted tablet above 1st floor at centre.

Plate glass sash and case windows, several replacements. Grey slate roof; moulded octagonal cans; scrolled skewputts.

INTERIORS: not seen 1990.

Low saddleback wall to street.

Forms continuous irregular terrace with 77-115 and 123-129 (odd nos) Marchmont Road and 2-10 (inc) Beaufort Road. Designed for the strathearn Building Society.
