Description

Hippolyte Jean Blanc, 1880. 4-storey, 4-bay Scottish 17th century style tenement, forming part of terrace. Squared and snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. Base course; string course above 1st floor; cornice above 2nd floor; 3rd floor windows breaking eaves; chamfered reveals.

W ENTRANCE elevation: central roll-moulded doorway; panelled door; plate glass fanlight. Square blank heraldic tablet set between 2nd and 3rd floors above. Single windows in bays flanking doorway at ground and 3rd floors; bipartite windows at 1st and 2nd floors; pedimented and finialled dormerheads to 3rd floor windows. Full-height advanced tripartite windows in bay to outer right; crowstepped gablehead with square blank heraldic tablet inset. Full-height canted window in bay to outer left; ogival roof with fishscale slates and cast-iron finial. Plate glass sash and case windows; replacements at 1st floor to right. grey slate roof; crowstepped gable adjoining tenement to N; rendered and coped wallhead stack; rendered and coped mutual stacks.

INTERIORS: not seen 1991.

Low boundary wall to street.

Statement of Interest

Designed with Nos 21 and 23 Marchmont Road for the developers, Galloway and Mackintosh. The dean of Guild plans differ in a number of respects from the tenements as built.
