Description

H M office of Works, 1919, 5-bay symmetrical rectangular-plan postal sorting office. Squared and snecked sandstone; rake-jointed sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. Base course; eaves band course.

N ELEVATION: 5-bay with central 3 bays recessed; advanced and architraved doorpiece at centre, keystoned and corniced with obelisk finials above; replacement aluminium doors and fanlight; pilasters flanking single window at 1st floor, with corbels to lintel above. Full-height pilasters flanking single window at 1st floor with corbels to lintel above. Full-height pilasters flanking single windows in 2nd and 4th bays, with corbels to lintel above; aprons to 1st floor windows. Single windows to outer left and right.

E ELEVATION: corbelled chimneybreast.

W ELEVATION: 5 lights to single storey flat-roofed addition; corbelled chimneybreast.

S REAR ELEVATION: large pitched-roof sorting office.

18-pane sash and case windows (upper sash blocked to 1st floor window in 2nd bay). Grey slate roof; corniced gablehead stacks; coped gables; scroll skewputts.

INTERIOR: not seen 1991.

GATEPIERS and BOUNDARY WALLS: 2 coped gatepiers to pedestrian gateway; low coped boundary wall with modern railings to street; high coped mutual boundary walls.
