Description

Probably Edward Calvert, 1881. 5-storey and basement with 5th storey as mansard attic, 5-bay tenement with baronial details, forming part of terrace. Squared and snecked pink sandstone with contrasting polished ashlar dressings. String course at 1st floor; corbel table at 4th floor stepped down at centre; shaped gables; stop-chemfered reveals.

N ENTRANCE elevation: architraved segmental-arched doorways with recessed polished granite colonnettes and foliate capitals in 2nd and 4th bays; single windows flanking doorways to right and left respectively; deep-set panelled doors; plate glass fanlights. Single windows above in 2nd bay; crowstepped dormerhead at 4th floor. Bipartite windows above in 4th bay; 4th floor dormerhead linked to wallhead stack. Relieving arch over simpler doorway with panelled door and plate glass fanlight in 3rd (central) bay; bipartite windows above; crowstepped dormerhead at 4th floor linked towallhead stack. Full-height canted windows corbelled to square at 4th floor in bays to outer left and right; tripartite windows with single lights to returns at 4th floor; cornices above ground and 2nd floors;dividing string course above 1st floor. Ciphered panel set at 3rd floor between 3rd and 4th bays. Plate glass sash and case windows. Grey slate roof; corniced wallhead stack; coped mutual stacks; stone finials; beak skewputts.

INTERIORS: not seen 1991.

RAILINGS: decorative cast-iron railings to basement and steps up to entrances.

Statement of Interest

Probably designed as a speculative development by Calvert for himself (Calvert is the petitioner on the Dean of Guild warrant).
