S Henbest Capper (Edinburgh), 1891. Scots 17th century
style. 2 and 3-storey and attic former orphanage,
single-storey outbuildings attached at W. 6 x 5 unequal
bays, U-planned. Bull-nosed red, snecked rubble with
ashlar dressings. Sash and case and casement windows
with glazing bars.
ENTRANCE ELEVATION: E facing advanced end gables,
2 and 3-storey respectively, crowstepped. Tall,
elliptically arched entrance set in re-entrant angle
of S gable, broken pediment with apex pediment breaking
through. Buttress to right. Central 4-light, stepped stair
window, stone mullioned and transomed. Polygonal,
independently roof bay attached at re-entrant angle of
N gable. Each gable has pedimented aedicule window at
3 3-light dormers. Axial stacks.
Plain E return elevation with 5 segmentally pedimented
dormers, central crowstepped gabled wallhead stack.
W RETURN ELEVATION: single-storey, crowstepped gabled,
advanced wing to N. Ground floor bay window in 1st
return bay from S. 1st floor cill band, 3 segmentally
pedimented dormers breaking through roof line,
crowstepped nepus gable with aedicule window in 4th
bay from S. Further corniced wallhead stack.
Plain rear elevations repeating main detailing.
Single storey attached outbuildings to E and S.
