Description

J N Fatkin, 1938. 2 large H-plan, 6-storey (the western part of this E block is 7-storeys) blocks of purpose-built flatted mansion blocks in 1930's streamline manner. Reinforced concrete frame with brick facing and decorative brick detailing, prominent horizontal white painted concrete banding mainly defining balconies and main windows. Metal-framed multi-light windows, small pane glazing with horizontal panes to centre lights of square projecting windows. Flat roofs with lift towers and grouped stacks.

N ELEVATION: entrances at re-entrant angles and at centre in stepped tower-like feature, boldly defined white painted surrounds and projecting fins, tall narrow stair windows above with glass-brick glazing. N ends of wings with projecting outer square windows linked by further projecting balcony. Inner bays balanced around centre; variety of square, projecting and canted windows with some simple 2 and 3-light additional windows or balcony doors. Continuous band courses define brick-work between 1/2, 2/3, and 4/5 floors and over 5th. 2nd-4th floor bands define balconies and canted windows only.

S ELEVATION: entrance towers flank central section. Similar details used in differing pattern; curved balconies at angles of projecting bays.

SIDE ELEVATIONS: continue the pattern of long fronts with additional service entrances and kitchen and bathroom fenestration (including small porthole windows). The 2 blocks are linked by low garage block.

Statement of Interest

The largest flatted development in Scotland until the post war expansion.
