Description

Fryers and Penman, circa 1903. 2-storey Edwardian villa in Scottish revoval style incorporating Scots Baronial and 17th century Renaissance details. Bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings. Cill courses; ashlar mullioned windows with stop-chamfered arrises; cartouche decoration to 1st floor window aprons to N elevation; crowstepped dormerheads to windows breaking eaves.

N (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: 3-bay elevation with 2-storey block recessed to right (W) and porch in re-entrant angle. Advanced ashlar porch, roll-moulded surround, balustraded parapet with raised ashlar panel to centre, 2-leaf panelled doors. Dormerheaded window in re-entrant angle to left above porch, window flanking to left. Taller crowstepped gable to 2-storey block to right, with full-height canted windows. Advanced 3-bay block to left with bipartite window to centre at ground, dormerheaded window above. Full-height canted windows of 1-2-1 lights to right. Full-height semi-octagonal bay canted out from left angle, regular fenestration, balustraded parapet with ball finials to dies.

ELEVATION: advanced 2-storey block to centre,canted window at ground, crenellated parapet, dormerheaded bipartite window above (metal walkway link to No 2 Whittingehame Gardens above crenellated parapet and slapped into bipartite window). V-plan window projecting to right, dormerheaded bipartite window above.

Timber sash and case windows with a variety of glazing patterns, 6-pane to lower sashes and 4-pane to upper, also 9-pane and 6-pane upper. Grey/green slate roof, some stacks unsympathetically renewed in cream sandstone ashlar and red brick. cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen.

Statement of Interest

Part of Lansdowne Clinic with No 2 Whittingehame Gardens. Not in reidential use. Notes as No 1 Whittingehame Gardens. No 3 is the same design as Nos 1,6,8 and 10.
