Description

Fryers & Penman, circa 1904. 2-storey Edwardian villa in Scottish Revival style incorporating Scots Baronial and 17th century Renaissance details. Bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings. Cill courses; ashlar mullioned windows with stop-chamfered arisses; crenellated parapet to projecting windows; cartouche decoration to 1st floor window aprons on N elevation; crowstepped dormerheads to windows breaking eaves.

N (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: 3-bay elevation with 2-storey block recessed to left (E) and porch in re-entrant angle. Advanced ashlar porch, rope-moulded surround, balustraded parapet with raised panel to centre with lion rampant; 2-leaf panelled storm doors, partly glazed vestibule door. Dormerheaded window to right above porch. Taller crowstepped gable to 2-storey block to left with full-height canted windows. Advanced 3-bay block to right with bipartite window to centre at ground, finialled dormerheaded window above. Full-height canted windows of 1-2-1 lights to left. Full-height semi-octagonal bay canted out from right angle, regular fenestration, balustraded parapet with urn-like finials to dies. Small nbartizan in angle to left.

W ELEVATION: V-plan window projecting to centre, bipartite dornmerheaded window above. Full-height canted window to right.

2-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey/green slate roof; corniced sandstone stacks (partly reduced to W elevation). Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen.

GATEPIERS: red sandtsone ashlar drum piers with pyramidal caps and 2-leaf wrought-iron gates.

Statement of Interest

In use as a nursery school. NOTES as for No 1 Whittingehame Gardens. No 10 is the same design as Nos 1, 3, 6 and 8.
