Description

"Alexander Skirving FRIBA Architect" (inscription).
Erected 1887. Monument commemorating battle of Langside
of 13th May 1568 where a force under the Regent Moray
defeated that of Mary Queen of Scots. Elaborately-spiralled
shaft set on stepped and rusticated square plinth and
surmounted by lion. Stone-cleaned and restored March 1987
(plaque).

Statement of Interest

Mary had escaped from imprisonment on Lochleven Castle

and was heading for Dumbarton when news of her approach

reached Moray, who set off to intercept her force; from

Langside battlefield she fled south, crossed the Solway

in to England where she was again imprisoned and ultimately

executed by Queen Elizabeth.
