Description

Circa 1878-80. Astylar Thomsonesque terrace stepped up slope,
curving at W (Nos 11-19) with No 20 being the 4-bay flank,
some variation in details.
3-storey attic and basement 2-bay houses with 2/3 storey
canted bay windows to right and steps oversailing basement to
tripartite doorpieces, of various types, to left Nos 19 and
20 with 4-bay elevations. Polished ashlar, partly stone
cleaned. All doorpieces tripartite with glazed sidelights:
Nos 1-6 with recessed slender and pilastered reveals
supporting lintel. Nos 7-19 with Egyptian lotus columns set
within moulded architrave supporting entablature. Above doors
consoled corniced window. 2nd floor, single and tripartite
windows with dwarf pilasters supporting lintel linked by
incised band of Thomsonesque decoration. Sash windows, plate
glass glazing. Continuous band course at 1st and 2nd floor
cills. Plain main cornice to Nos 1-6, otherwise mutule
cornice. Aedicular dormers with acroteria finials at Nos 1-3
and 7-19 set in mansard roofs at Nos 3 and 7-19. Corniced
axial stacks, slate roofs.
Flank to W; No 20 Athole Gardens (Notre Dame Child Guidance
Clinic) 4-bay. Central round-headed tripartite doorpiece
flanked by Corinthian pilasters; carved spandrels. Slender
recessed pilasters flanking double leaf doors support
corniced lintel. Above door, 3-light bowed oriel with engaged
composite columns. Otherwise details as main facade. Corniced
wallhead stacks linked by dormers; mansard slate roofs.
