Description

Circa 1893. 2 storeys, attic and basement, Jacobean detailed semi-detached villa with symmetrical facade to W and entrance

facades to N and S. Stugged ashlar with polished margins and

dressings; rock-faced basement. Picturesque gabled finialled

roofline with finialled dormers breaking through eaves.

Windows mainly single light, sash and case, plate glass, roll

moulded or with hollow chamfered architraves.

W elevation, symmetrical 4-bay with advanced gabled outer

bays with 2-storey canted windows rising to solid parapet.

Bipartite roll moulded windows set in gable. Inner bays with

single light windows. Continuous string course at 1st floor

cills.

N facade, entrance to No 8 irregular 3-bay with taller

advanced gabled bay to left with 2-storey canted window,

continuous hood mould over ground; hooded mullioned bipartite

set in gable, flanked by octagonal ogee-capped finials. To

centre, steps oversailing basement to depressed arched

doorpiece with obelisk finials flanking pierced "cartouche"

pediment. Balustraded single storey angled bay to right,

windows with stained glass. Steps and basement area with

balustraded parapet.

S elevation; irregular 3-bay with advanced gabled bay to

left. At ground roll-moulded window set in panel with

consoles supporting balcony with pierced parapet to 1st floor

window. Steps oversailing basement to No 4: central doorpiece

with consoles supporting round arched hood. Otherwise, S

elevation plainer in detail. Deep parapet to all elevations;

tall Jacobean stacks; axial stacks; slate roofs.

Some good interiors survive; rococco marble chimney pieces

and panelled ceilings and French Louis Quinze plasterwork.

Low stugged coped ashlar walls to gardens. 2 pairs of tall

square coped ashlar gatepiers.
