Description

John Gordon, architect, circa 1883. Asymmetrical L-plan house in Dutch Renaissance style; 2 storeys and attics with 4-storey tower in re-entrant angle of entrance front. Lightly stugged ashlar with polished margins and dressings. Pilasters at angles and flanking most windows, elaborate roofline with shaped gables with broken segmental pediments flanked by urns on pedestals. Plate glass sash windows throughout. Cornice over ground and 1st floors and all bands encircle building, steeply pitched slate roofs.

Elevation to Cleveden Road; 3-bay with 2-storey curved bow window to left with pilaster mullions rising to balustraded parapet, gable above with single arched attic window. Steps to central pilastered doorpiece with round arched fanlight and moulded architrave at base of 4-storey tower; above 1st floor pilastered pedimented window; at 2nd bipartite window with segmental pediment; at 3rd floor, arched windows in groups of 3 to all elevations. Bracketted cornice, die balustrade and urns. To right, 2-storey square projecting window rising to small gable.

S elevation; 2-bay with 2-storey 5-light bow to left rising to balustraded parapet; arched attic light in gable above. To right 2-storey square projecting windows surmounted by parapet with pedestals and urns.

N elevation; 3-bay with tall gable to right; 2-light square projecting window to left rising to small gable; canted window to centre with tripartite window at 1st. Square bay window at right with tripartite window above; round arched attic window set in gable.

E elevation irregular, gabled; coursed stugged ashlar with gables rising to corniced stacks.

To S small, gabled single storey building ?laundry.

Droved ashlar garden wall with polished coping; tall square painted ashlar gatepiers with elaborate decorated caps.

Interior: Corinthian column screen to hall, good cornice plaster work, painted frieze of rural scenes. Elaborately carved pedimented door cases with cherub and fruit tympanum. Good stained glass (figurative) window to stair.
