Description

Leonard Stokes. London, architect, with Colin Menzies,
Glasgow; 1907. Symmetrical modern movement telephone exchange
3 storeys. Polychrome ashlar building using cream sandstone
for ground floor, recessed banded pilasters at angles (from
1st floor) and most dressings and margins. Red sandstone used
in bands with cream between 1st and 2nd floor windows; strips
of red stone divide windows and flank canted windows.
Elevation to Highburgh Road; 6-bay with single windows
flanking central doorpiece with double-leaf doors and glazed
fanlight. Above door, paired canted 3-light oriels rise from
1st through 2 storeys. Caledon Street elevation 9-bay with
paired canted oriels at penultimate bays. To extreme right at
ground; arched doorpiece with bold keystone, double-leaf
panelled door, glazed fanlight. All window paired except at
extreme left bay of Celedon Street elevation, panel frieze
over 1st and 2nd. Heavy bracketted cornice, deep plain
parapet wall-head stacks linked by arcade over canted bays.
Stugged ashlar flank to W. Rendered rear. Brick addition to
N W.
Low coped ashlar wall with cast-iron railings to main
elevations.
