Description

Burnet, Boston and Carruthers, architects; 1907. 3-bay villa
adjoining No 1 Hughenden Terrace, 2 storeys and basement.
Polished ashlar, stonecleaned.
Steps oversailing basement to wide doorpiece with consoles
supporting curvilinear hood. Double-leaf panelled outer door;
vestibule door tripartite with pilastered jambs; sidelights
and fanlight and upper door panel all with elaborate art
nouveau leaded coloured glass. Full height 4-light canted
windows, flank door; angled mullions at ground floor
pilastered and lintelled, incised to 1st floor cill. Above
door, single light window. Sash windows with lower sash plate
glass and upper sashes with art nouveau leaded glass. Eaves
band, cornice. Corniced end stacks, slate roofs.
Whole house on built up platform with terraced garden. Tall
flight of steps to door with coursed ashlar retaining wall
supporting cast-iron railings with intermediate square ashlar
piers. Pair of tall square ashlar gatepiers with dentil
course and domical copes; low ashlar boundary wall.
Good art nouveau interior with well-preserved leaded glass to
most windows. Much original woodwork inlcuding fitted
bookcases, panelling and chimney pieces. Delicate plasterwork
to drawing room. Large stair window by E A Taylor.
