Description

Most probably H & D Barclay, architects; circa 1883.
Classical terrace 2-storeys, attics and basement; 3-bay
elevation to each house. Polished ashlar, mostly painted.
Steps oversailing basement to Ionic balustraded doorpiece.
Double-leaf panelled doors, inner vestibule doors tripartite
with glazed sidelights and fanlight. At ground floor: to
left; 4-light canted window; to right 5-light square window,
both with balustraded parapets. 1st floor windows in lugged
architraves; outer tripartite, central bipartite. Sash
windows, plate glass glazing. Continuous dentil cornice over
ground. Band course over 1st floor lintels; dentil cornice at
eaves. Deep incised parapet broken by bipartite pedimented
dormers supporting console scrolls and akroteria. Corniced
axial stacks, octagonal slate roofs.
Good interiors; coved plaster cornices to drawing rooms.
Corinthian hall screen, good carved timber door surrounds;
glazed cupola over stair.
Ashlar parapet to steps, either pierced quatrefoil or
balustraded. Low coped ashlar retaining/boundary wall to
street.
To rear of No 10; mews cottage No 1 Montague Lane. 2 storey
stugged ashlar cottage, stonecleaned. Dormer window with
incised architrave. Wide carriage entrances to ground.

Statement of Interest

Formerly Montague Terrace. Very similar in detail to plans

for lodgings in Balgray Road dated 1881 by H & D Barclay,

completed as Hughenden Terrace. Plans in SRO RHP/10389.
