Description

David Barclay, architect; 1902. Terraced pair of asymmetrical
polished red sandstone houses adjoining No 33 Kings Gate at
S; No 37 aligned with Victoria Crescent Road. 2 storeys,
attics and low basement. Polished red ashlar, stugged at
basement, No 35 stonecleaned. No 35 3-bay elevation; No 37,
2-bay elevation to Kings Gate, 3-bay entrance elevation to
Victoria Crescent Road.
Balustraded steps to centrally placed Roman Doric porch
supported on polished red granite columns. Doorpiece with
rounded arrises; double-leaf panelled door flanked by narrow
sidelights. Flanking porch to left corniced square projecting
3-light balustraded window to ground floor. To right,
2-storey canted window with facetted roof at eaves; at No 37,
small leaded lights to right of door. Otherwise all 1st floor
windows bipartite with flat architraves.
No 37 2-bay elevation to Kings Gate with windows arranged as
No 35. Sash windows, lower sashes plate glass; some upper
sashes and sidelights with leaded coloured glass. Continuous
moulded band courses over ground. Band course at eaves,
timber bracketted eaves. Bipartite dormer at No 37. Corniced
axial stacks, octagonal cans, slate roofs. Red tile ridge and
finials to canted roofs.
Rear elevation stugged ashlar, No 35 with single storey
canted bay windows.
Communal driveway with No 33 Kings Gate and 2 pairs of round
capped ashlar gatepiers; right pair with ball finials. No 37
with low polished ashlar boundary wall to garden.
