Description

Circa 1890. Asymmetrical pair of villas occupying important
corner site; No 26 with angled main elevation. Both villas of
finely droved ashlar with smooth rusticated quoins; glass
sash windows. Windows mostly single light with polished
raised margins or single or 2-storey projecting canted or
square windows with cornice and embattled parapet.
NO 26: 2-storey and attic with 4-storey tower. Irregular
3-bay stepped-plan to entrance elevation with central tower
rising to embattled parapet. At base of tower, single storey
projecting clustered column porch with embattled parapet.
Pointed-arch door with moulded archivolt; double-leaf door
with fanlight. To left, advanced gabled bay with 2-storey
projecting canted window; 3-light attic window with stepped
hood mould set in gable. To right of tower, angled bay with
hood-moulded windows with grotesque label-stops; large leaded
glass window.
N ELEVATION: 5 gabled bays with projecting 2-storey windows
to right, all detailed as above. Band course over ground,
string course over 1st.
NO 24: similar in detail. 2-storey 3-bay elevation with outer
bays gabled. Lower 2-storey block to right. Steps with
balustraded parapet leading to pointed-arch door with moulded
hood, foliate label stops and polished pink granite nook
shafts. Double-leaf panelled door, good leaded glass
vestibule door; above door, single light sash. To right,
2-storey projecting canted window detailed as No 26; to left
single storey square projecting window with hood moulded
bipartite above.
Both villas with steeply pitched slated roofs; tall corniced
axial and wallhead stacks, octagonal cans. Stugged ashlar
rear elevations; No 24 with single storey canted window with
5 leaded lights. Low coped ashlar boundary walls with 3 pairs
of tall square painted ashlar gatepiers with ball finials.
