Description

Harry Wilson, Leeds, 1929; additions and alterations, R I Pierce and N Martin, 1938. 5-storey, symmetrical department store on prominent corner site. Portland stone cladding to steel frame. Shop front altered later, with moulded cornice retained.

ARGYLE STREET: giant quasi-Ionic pilasters flanking centre bay, fluted at base and neck, supporting chevroned (Red Indian) frieze spanning across flanking bays. Slightly projecting moulded panel across centre bay at 4th floor, with cusped voussoirs to semi-circular window above, flanked by square windows.

Cavetto arrises to outer jambs and lintels of flanking bays. Narrow, outer bays to 3rd floor height, cut back to concave at 4th floor, with small window set in and Art Deco lamp standards set on angle. Cavetto cornice with foliate detail and oval cartouche in concave bays; moulded blocking course above centre. Blue-painted decorative metal bands between floors (1st to 3rd) in Burton's house style, given wreath and acroteria at 2nd floor panels.

BUCHANAN STREET: detailed as Argyle Street elevation with paired quasi-Ionic pilasters (glazed between) flanking centre bay fleche detailed panels with quasi-anthemion above at 4th floor; anthemion details at impost of semi-circular window.

N ELEVATION: recessed from Buchanan Street. Plain ashlar with tripartite windows at ground. Narrow strip lights to centre and flanking wider windows. Fluted band above 3rd floor; elongated octagonal window to centre of 4th floor. Stepped string course above, and initialled oval cartouche on cavetto cornice.

Metal casement and hopper windows in 30's form, opaque at 1st floor.

Statement of Interest

Distinctive form of Burton Montague Company style. Martin was the house -architect, and his work can also be seen at Burton's store in Paisley.
