Robertson and Dobbie, dated 1908. Glasgow-style warehouse of 5
bays to Glassford Street, 4 bays to Wilson Street. Red sandstone
ashlar, with polished granite base course to shop fronts and
main entrance. Modillion cornice above shopfronts and cill
course to 4th floor. Square piercing to ashlar parapet.
GLASSFORD STREET ELEVATION: round arched, keystoned doorway
with cavetto moulded surround at centre; keystone supporting
canted oriel with stone transoms at 1st floor, culminating in
cornice with decorative cast bronze balcony railings, flanked
by corbelled cornice to pilasters flanking centre bay between
ground and 1st floor, 2-leaf, arched panelled doors,
inner small-pane and saloon doors, with pediment detail;
segmentally arched window at centre of 2nd floor, again with
keystone, supporting cill of segmental hood of 3rd floor window,
again with keystone. Piers flanking dated panel on parapet of
centre bay. Bowed cills, corbelled to 2nd floor windows.
Initialled (WFC) cartouche above ground floor on angle with
Wilson Street; angle swept into wall-pane above 1st floor;
and with water-spouts at base of jettied Mackintosh-style,
polygonal tourelle breaking eaves at 4th floor.
WILSON STREET ELEVATION: round arched, keystoned entrance
to outer left; stepped stair windows in bays above; bowed
corbelled cills with segmental hoods to 2nd floor windows
to right and left of centre.
Plate-glass lower and 2-pane upper sashes to windows. Decorative wrought-iron gate and overthrow to Wilson Street elevation.
INTERIOR: remodelled T M Millar, 1965. Glasgow Style timber
balustrade to stair at ground. Modern lift inserted at
centre of original stairwell.
Cast bronze work follows J J Burnet's use of the medium,
and was echoed by H E Clifford on 32-44 Queen Street.
