Description

James Taylor Thomson, 1931-2. 5-storey, 7-bay commercial building. Red sandstone ashlar; base course, and band course above ground.

N (WILSON STREET) ELEVATION: symmetrical. Entrance at centre with moulded chamfering to jambs and billeted lintels, flanked by stylised pilasters, breaking into 1st floor. Modern shop fronts to ground floor bays. Giant pilaster strips dividing

upper floors. Decorative cast and painted metal bands defining 2nd, 3rd and 4th floor levels, with roundel ornament marking those of outer bays.

E (HUTCHESON STREET) ELEVATION: 5-bay. Doorway to outer left bay, with altered shop front openings to inner and outer right bays. Service entrance at inner left bay with roller shutter, panelled doors to bin storage area in centre bay. Narrow outer bays above ground, with stair windows at left. Detailed as Wilson Street with pilasters and dividing bands.

W (GLASSFORD STREET) ELEVATION: 5-bay. Modern shop fronts with main entrance in centre bay with canopy over. Fire escape doors to outer bay right. Narrow outer bays, detailed as above. Hinged hopper windows. Flat roof.

Built for Messrs David Black and Co. Mixed housing / retail development with 2 additional storeys, completed 2003.
