Description

Gildard and Macfarlane, 1856. 2-storey and basement
classical astylar terrace of 3-bay houses with 3-storey
flatted advanced end pavilions. Ashlar, droved to basement,
channelled at ground floor, vermiculated long and short
angle quoins to all floors and to E and W return close
entries. Sash and case windows in architraves, some with
glazing bars.
MAIN ELEVATION: end pavilions (Nos 1 and 8): central console
corniced entrances at head of steps, flanking pilaster
mullioned and architraved bipartite windows with Greek key
lintels. Ground floor cornice forming 1st floor cill band,
corniced outer bipartites, with frieze, central keyblocked
window in lugged architraves. 1st floor frieze. 2nd floor
cill band, 2 and 1-light keyblocked arched windows. Bold
modillion cornice.
NOS 2-7: console corniced entries at left at head of steps,
Greek-key lintels. Pierced parapet walls with linked circle
pattern. 2 corniced windows with bracketted cills and lugged
architraves to right of each entrance. Continuous 1st floor
cill band. Plain 1st floor entablature, cornice. Partial
pierced parapet. Set-back dormers. Corniced axial stacks.
RETURN TO OAKFIELD AVENUE: 7 bays, 1st bay from N blind
bipartite. 3 storeys and full basement. Arched close entry
with vermiculated surround. Windows architraved. 3-bay 1st
floor centre section with pilasters and cornice. Cill band to
each upper floor. Wallhead stacks, rebuilt.
RETURN TO SOUTHPARK AVENUE: 9 bays, 1st bay from N and
2nd bay at ground floor blind. Ground floor channelled.
No 1 South Park Avenue with central tripartite entrance
section keyblocked arched door with sculpted tympanum and
open pediment; flanking columns and pilasters with banded
vermiculation; cornice carried in outer bays by banded
pilasters. Keyblocked, corniced windows above, pierced
parapet over.
