Description

H and D Barclay, 1883, with additional attic by S Preston
1908. School, classical with Greek detailing. 3 storeys, full
basement (rising to ground floor) and attic 15 x 3 main bays.
Stepped in slope. Polished ashlar, banding at ground floor.
Casement windows, T-pane glazing.
Central main entrance at head of steps with parapet walls.
3-bay section breaking forward, fluted pilastered entrance
with sidelights, panelled door. Architraved section above with
2 Ionic columns in antis, lettering in frieze "HILLHEAD HIGH
SCHOOL". Pedimented 3rd floor centre with caryatid busts on
fluted piers in antis.
Elliptically-arched basement windows with voussoirs in N bays,
entrance to right, architraved, console corniced with tablet
in frieze marked "BOYS" in relief lettering. Ground floor
level band course, plain windows with simple aprons. 1st
floor windows, 6 N bays anta pilastrade with aprons, linked
by independent cornice, 4 S bays recessed windows set in
semi-engaged Ionic collonade, linking cornice. Continuous
1st floor cornice, advanced over centre bays. 2nd floor dwarf
pilastrade windows in N bays, semi-engaged, dwarf Ionic
colonnade in S bays, parapet over, half-hipped attic.
N RETURN ELEVATION: continues detailing of main elevation, N
bays in 3 bays.
S RETURN ELEVATION: 3 ashlar bays with simple detailing.
Parapet, raised at angles. Plain rear and side elevations
of snecked rubble. Ashlar boundary wall. Cast-iron gates.
INTERIOR: cast-iron balusters to stairs and landings. Top-lit
entrance hall. Portrait of E E
