Description

H and D Barclay, 1892-1900. Free Renaissance commercial

building. 5 storeys and attic, 5 bays, outer bays wider.

Polished granite ground floor, red sandstone above. 2 original

shop fronts flank central recessed entrance, entablature over

ground floor supported by Roman Doric columns, paired at

central bay, round-headed door with fanlight. 1st and 2nd

floors, outer bays canted, 3 central bays with Gibbs surrounds. Bracketted balcony at 3rd floor, centre windows in outer

canted bays roundheaded, 3 central aedicule windows with

open pediments divided by pilasters. 4th floor bipartite

windows in outer bays, 3 pilastered central lights. Pilasters

divide central bays and support main cornice with breaks

forward over outer bays. Shaped gables over end bays, with

boldly projecting semi-circular panels, flank centre

semi-circular opening with bracketted, pedimented head and

framing Greek-cross plan stacks. Slate roof with red-tiled

ridge.
