Description

Peddie and Kinnear (Edinburgh), 1876-77. Large block of
commercial chambers (built as hotel). 2nd Empire with
Greek details. 6 and 8 storeys including double attic in
mansard. Curved 3-bay angle sections at Waterloo and
Bothwell Street. 23 bays to Hope Street arranged
5-3-7-3-5. Ashlar. Modern shops at ground floor. 1st
floor squat pilasters to part of elevation; entablature
above supports giant Greek Corinthian order in 3 advanced
bays to Hope Street; stylised Corinthian anta order to
all other bays through 2nd and 3rd floors; 2nd floor
windows balustraded, aprons to 3rd. Squat pilastrade to
4th floor with bipartite windows. Main consoled cornice
with panels over 4th. Pilastered and wallhead dormers to
1st attic, bipartite centrally over advanced bays, round
arched dormers to 2nd attic, taller mansard over advanced
bays. Slated mansards. Tall corniced batteries of stacks.
Detailing continues 4 bays into Waterloo Lane at rear N
and S return.

Statement of Interest

Early elevator building. Because of the slope in the

ground a mezzanine/1st floor is included in part of

elevation. In the description the 2nd storey is

immediately over the 1st entablature.
