John Burnet, dated 1876. Netherlandish Gothic detailed
school. 2 storeys, 9 x 3 unequal bays. Double pile with
recessed S gable and attached tower at E end of N gable.
Snecked rubble. Mainly casement windows with multi-pane
glazing. Battered plinth.
Hoodmoulded entrance to SE at base of stair tower with
lettering above "GIRLS"; 3 round-arched windows to E. Ground
floor raked stringcourse stepped up over N bipartite,
stone-transomed window, 2 similar windows above to SE and E
face of tower, embattled parapet, steeply-hipped, 2 stage
pyramidal slate roof with finial, attached stack.
N SECTION: 2 x 8-bay pile. Plain ground floor windows, raked
string course above. Raised lettering "OVERNEWTON PUBLIC
SCHOOL". 6 central, coped full dormers with acroteria,
flanked by small single-light windows. E return: as main
elevation with hoodmould round-arched in centre framing
sculpted Glasgow coat of arms. Roll-moulded, coped gable with
stack: lettering "SCHOOL BOARD OF GLASGOW". Slate roof.
S section: repeats N section.
W RETURN: double gable as main elevation, single bay linking
section with arched entrance marked "BOYS" Glazed tiled,
cast-iron columned, single storey shelters in playground.
3 x 1-bay caretaker's house to S with half-dormers.
Stepped boundary wall to E attached to N section with arched
entrance marked "GIRLS AND INFANTS".
