Description

T L Watson, 1877. Italianate church. 5 x 9 bays. Polished ashlar, channelled at ground floor; snecked rubble rear elevation. Main block with raised temple front advanced to Pitt Street and flanking symmetrically pedimented transverse blocks at E and W ends.

MAIN ELEVATION TO PITT STREET: 3 round-headed, recessed corniced doorways with panelled doors and pilastered reveals at head of flight of steps with die walls and piers; outer panelled recessed bays with blind, dwarf pilastrade, repeated over pedimented entrance facing Bath Street and Bath Lane; blind tetrastyle temple front raised over entrances with coupled Corinthian columns supporting the pediment; black wall pierced by 3 round-headed windows in Venetian arcade repeated in 6 bays of main block in Bath Street; lower recessed block glazed pilastrade, doubled at angles, and pedimented at gallery level to Bath Street and Bath Lane.

ELEVATION TO BATH STREET: main block ground floor: 6 2-light sash and case windows with pilaster mullions and dentils. Lower advanced to extension with similar recessed doorway and 2-light arched window recessed above.

Pedimented end bay with 2-light, pilastered mullioned window with dentils on ground floor and 2-light arcaded window with outer pilasters and plain frieze on 1st floor. Slate roof.

ELEVATION TO BATH LANE: repeats Bath Street elevation in final 7 bays from W without dressings.

Cast-iron railings on stone copings; corniced piers; ashlar boundary wall; cast-iron lamp standards.

INTERIOR: galleried interior. Pews in circular curves round central point; platform with plain reading desk (no pulpit) in front of baptistery of white marble. Staircase at each of the 4 angles to the galleries.

Statement of Interest

Ecclesiastical building in use as such. Stained glass in west wall by W and J J Kerr - Christ and the Wise Virgins, Timothy and his Mother, Paul and Isiah. Seating for 960.
