Description

Frank Southorn, 1911-12. Edwardian classical commercial
building. 7 storeys and attic, 10 bays arranged
1-3-2-3-1 with facade divided into 5 vertical sections,
2nd and 4th projecting. Ashlar; 3/4 height, channelled
polished granite at ground floor, ashlar above, brick
flank walls. 3 arched entrances symmetrically placed,
swagged with number panels above. 2 tripartite windows
inner piers with central console heads survive in
Western bays; ground floor mutule cornice over fascia
projecting sections with bold corbelled balconies at 2nd
floor supporting seated figures. Sash and case windows
some with margin panes. 1st and 2nd floor outer and
central windows vertically linked in keyblocked
continuous architraves; repeated 3rd-5th floors with
scroll keystones. Continuous simple 2nd floor cornice.
Giant swagged anta order flanks projecting bays 3rd-5th
floors. Main mutule cornice. Parapet attic pierced with
windows; scrolls with carved lion heads flank projecting
bays. Green tiled mansard roof, corniced stacks. Nos
109-13 with polished granite curb and piers supporting
decorative cast-iron railings to unusual basement steps.
