James Thomson, 1896-97. Free classical, 6-storey (including mezzanine) office building, ground floor altered Thomas Tait 1933; 3 x 7 unequal bays. Polished red ashlar. Sash and case windows in architraves.
Original entrance at No 137 West George Street arched, pilastered doorpiece with mask keyblock, at head of steps with polished granite die walls. Sandstone ground floor with fluted pilasters dividing bays, bronze dressings, granite plinth.
ELEVATION TO WEST GEORGE STREET: windows arranged 2-3-2, central bay advanced. Ground floor mutule cornice. Richly sculpted, bracketted 1st floor cornice supporting 2nd floor solid balcony; pilastered, arched windows with panelled spandrels, keyblocked, corniced, central window aediculed with granite shafted columns. 3rd floor windows, lugged architraves. 4th floor Corinthian columns to arcaded windows,
sculpted frieze, bracketted cornice. Balustraded die parapet, pierced over centre bay, flanked by finials.
ELEVATION TO RENFIELD STREET: repeating West George Street detailing. Windows arranged 3-2-1-1-3-2. Granite columned tripartite at 1st floor supporting arched aedicule window with flanking columns above. Arched columned window, 4th bay from N at 2nd floor, flat-headed columned window 6th bay at 3rd floor, broken segmental pediment with sculpted tympanum over.
Built for Lancashire Insurance Company. The original shop front by T S Tait has been much enlarged. The mask above the doorway on West George Street is that of the architect, James Thomson.
