Description

Circa 1830. Block of classical terraced houses, 3 and

4-storeys and basement; 3 bays each inner house, 5 bays at

ends probably flatted. 6-bay western (2nd bay from S blind)

9-bay eastern return, (1st bay from S blind at ground and 1st

floors). Various alterations and additions. Polished ashlar

channelled at basement. Entries at left in central houses,

central entries at ends, each at head of steps.

Central bays simple pilastered, corniced doorpieces; No 204

Roman Ionic projecting portico; No 226 semi-engaged Roman

Ionic portico. Pilastered, corniced doorpiece with double

entry and fanlights at No 114 West Campbell Street. Windows

sash and case in architraves some 12-pane glazing to West

Campbell Street. Ground floor windows (altered at No 208)

corbelled cills, corniced and block pedimented with antefixae

at No 204; No 216 2nd floor plain. Raised later with 2 and

3-light windows in centre house; some dormers. 1st floor

cornice.

EASTERN PAVILION: raised and extended to rear; consoled

segmentally pedimented, architraved entrance and consoled,

pedimented window above in 3rd bay from N. 2nd floor windows

recessed architraves dropped to 1st floor cornice with

moulded cills and panelled aprons, repeated in Wellington

Street with 2-light windows in 2nd bay from S. Similar window arrangement on all floors in Wellington Street, anta mullion

window at 1st floor 2-light window. Plain eaves entablature;

modillion cornice.

ELEVATION TO WEST CAMPBELL STREET: dormer; reduced, corniced

wallhead stack; single storey service wing altered to shop

with segmentally pedimented doorpiece.

INTERIORS: include No 204 corniced vestibule, column hall

screen.
