Description

J Nisbet, 1902-03. Large villa built on slope overlooking Springkell Avenue. Style combines Scots baronial with English Queen Anne. Mainly 2 storeys, with attics; asymmetrical stugged and snecked red ashlar at ground, white-rendered above, polished ashlar dressings, contrasting at 1st floor; blocked deep cornices; red-tile roofs; single, mullioned/mullioned and transomed windows, casements, mainly small leaded panes. Off-centre curved bay with swept-eaved steep conical roof, recessed bay left jettied above curved ground floor window, open-pedimented steep gable above with small attic light; stacks have grouped diamond flues (white-rendered red ashlar at tops); complex rooflines. Boundary wall also red ashlar, channelled piers. Interior is handsome; public rooms on ground floor are well-detailed with decorative friezes and chimney-pieces; room to W is L-plan with ingle-neuk - chimney-piece removed, overmantel survives and contains tapestry by Ann MacBeth; oak timber panelling and staircase; much leaded glass including small figurative panels, some panels removed; light fittings have art nouveau detailing.

Statement of Interest

Built for J A MacTaggart and Co, builders. Nisbet, and later Mickel, were architects used by John Auld MacTaggart's Property Companies for various developments in Glasgow and the West of Scotland. The firm later became MacTaggart and Mickel.
