Description

Dated 1885. Sundial with extravagant mannerist ornament, one of perhaps 3 19th century replicas made of the identical pair of sundials erected at Newbattle in 1635. Ashlar. Sundial proper is a massive octagonal block, with crests and 2 tiers of dials, held by 4 grittins above panelled octagonal base on concentric stepped plinth. Decorative tall obelisk finial on 4 balls above elaborate consoled support.

Statement of Interest

Copies of the Newbattle dials were made for Lord Haddington and for Lord Hume (this dial is believed to have been made for Douglas Castle) - see MacGibbon and Ross, CASTELLATED AND DOMESTIC ARCHITECTURE OF SCOTLAND, vol V, pp472-4 (description and sketch of Newbattle dial); volume first publishdd 1892, ie after this sundial was made.
