Sam Bunton, 1937-9. Modern Movement single and 2-storey lighting department of interlocking cubic blocks, with raised basement on ground falling to rear. Tall, silver-black brick base course and silver-grey bricks above; grey brick dressings to principal windows and lintels to lesser. Concrete coped wallhead.
W (MILLBRAE ROAD) ELEVATION: 2-storey block with advanced lower bay to left with glass brick stair window turning corner to outer left and tall, narrow stair window to right, overhanging coping at wallhead; deep square brick porch canopy projecting in re-entrant angle (formed with higher bays behind to right), with slate coping, resting on blue glazed and banded pilotis; stepped grey brick surround to door; higher bay with window band at ground turning corner to S lighting public office and tall 3-light window to taller 1st floor with flush brick detailing over centre light. Recessed single storey workshop block to outer left with curved projecting link in re-entrant angle; window band running round corner of single storey block.
E (OVERDALE AVENUE) ELEVATION: on falling ground. Main block at centre with projecting stair block with tall, narrow window to left and single storey section advanced to right; raised basement on falling ground with door and slit windows. Single storey garage block projecting to left, abacking workshop.
N ELEVATION: 2-storey main block to right with single-tripartite-single window arrangement to ground and 1st floors. Tall single storey bays to left containing store rooms. Recessed to left, side elevation of stair block. Recessed to outer left, N elevation of garage with tall doorway and window band.
S ELEVATION: 2-storey bays to left with window bands to both floors.
Single storey workshop and garage to right with garage doors to left flanked by window bands.
Metal framed, horizontal-pane windows.
INTERIOR: not seen.
Bunton was a key figure in the post-war re-development of Glasgow, the architect of the Red Road Housing scheme. Built as the divisional control station for Glasgow Corporation Lighting Department, it is a good, restrained and highly-functional design, demonstrating the
practical dignity possible with Modern Movement architecture.
