Description

1884. 3-storey, 3-bay gabled tenement block with shops at ground floor and terrace on lower ground to rear, raised storage basement below. Red sandstone, ashlar front, squared and snecked stugged rubble to rear and sides. Continuous fascia and cornice above shopfronts; cill course at 2nd floor; roll-moulded arrises; overhanging eaves with exposed rafters; coped skews.

S (FRONT) ELEVATION: shopfronts at ground floor altered except No 44 with recessed doorway and plain slender columns. Centre bay above gabled with apex stack decorated with shafts rising from cornice in gablehead; paired pedimented windows at 1st floor with bracketted eaves; paired round-arched windows at 2nd floor in recessed, round-arched panel with hoodmould. Semicircular, 2-storey oriels corbelled above ground floor to flanking bays with 3 windows per floor and finialled conical roofs.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: single storey terrace with 3 segmental-arched openings (1 now blocked as pedestrian entrance). Rectangular stair well with catslide roof to centre bays above, paired stair windows with coloured border glazing. Tenement doors with single windows flanking in outer bays. 2-storey canted bays rising from 1st floor above enclosed by balconies with decorative railings.

Some timber sash and case windows, mostly plate glass glazing, 4-pane top sashes to round-arched windows, replacement windows to remaining windows. Green slate roof; coped apex stacks to front (see above) and W gable.

INTERIOR: not seen 1993.
