Description

Cullen, Lochhead and Brown, begun 1910, opened 1913 as
Hamilton Academy. Classical with some details of French
neo-classic derivation, quadrangular plan, symmetrical
ashlar frontage of 3 storeys. Main block has 12 window
main facade with pavilion roofed channelled one window
advanced ends, centre 2-window bay channel-pilastered
with segmental pediment containing swagged clock through
ground and first floors, single-storey square-piered
open porch, piers treated as broad panelled Doric
pilasters, heavy entablature with blocking course. End
bays have shallow porches tall stair windows recessed in
concave splays and arched second floor windows with
corbelled iron balconies, intermediate bays have
bipartites at ground floor and single lights above,
ground and first floor windows linked by heavy apron
blocks, second floor balcony continuous except where
interrupted by pediment. Architraves. Set back lower
3-storey 3-window piended wings with rusticated
doorpieces. Asymmetrical single-storey 2-window block
to left with ventilator and 2 corniced stacks. 3-window
flank and 2-window and door link to similar 3-window block.
Main block has 14-window side elevations, with door and
porch to east at eighth from right, and 11-window north
elevation with large tall ashlar stack. Eaves cornice.
Slated roof.
Single-storey building in grounds, similar style, with
3-window end gables and 6-window centre, much added to.
Four square corniced ashlar gatepiers to front and 2 to
Union Street with low wall and railings.
