Eustace Balfour, circa 1880. L-plan. Single storey and attic. Rubble; harled front; 1 rendered side; gabled slate roofs; 4 gabled dormers. Ashlar chimneys. N gable curvilinear; panel with ducal coat-of-arms and motto; string course; plaque commemorating Elizabeth, Duchess of Argyll. S gable plain; decorative skew-putts. Ashlar bay window.
Restaurant on ground floor. Upper floor originally used
chiefly for meetings. Built for town at expense of 8th
Duke of the Public Reading Room and Coffee House.
Balfour was the Duke's son-in-law, brother of A J Balfour and pupil of Basil Champneys.
