Description

Late 17th century. Single chamber rectangular-plan lectern dovecot; roofless and in ruinous state (2003). Random rubble; hammer-dressed quoins; projecting alighting ledge to W. Narrow door lintel.

Statement of Interest

At the time of the previous survey (1979), it was noted that this dovecot was crowstepped and roofless. Although the main fabric of the dovecot still seems relatively stable, it has suffered from neglect for many years. However the structure cannot be viewed in full at present due to overgrown ivy (2003). The RCAHMS survey of 1933 revealed 336 stone nesting boxes, however none now remain (2003). This dovecot was built in the former grounds of Thomson's House (see separate listing) and is one of two surviving dovecots in Inverkeithing Burgh (see seperate listing, Commercial Road, Roseberry Doocot). Dovecots were a valuable source of meat and manure but also a visible symbol of the wealth and status of the landowners and burgesses.
