Description

Late 17th century fabric with later alterations. Single storey, 3-bay, symmetrical, rectangular-plan, crowstepped-gabled house in close off W side of Albert Street, abutting Number 35A to right (W) and Number 37 to right (E), (neither listed). Harled. Cement margins to openings.

N (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: steps to deep-set modern, part-glazed door in bay to centre. Window in each bay flanking.

Timber-framed windows with top-hung upper lights. Grey slate roof; stone ridge; uPVC rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1998.

Statement of Interest

A low single storey house which lines part of a typical Kirkwall close. A previous description mentions the former presence of shed dormers, no longer apparent. The unusually steep pitch of the roof suggests that the building may have been thatched originally. The survival of the original crowstepped gables is of particular interest.
