Statement of Interest

Lanark Grammar School was built in 1883 (as shown by a datestone in a gable of the north elevation) and opened the following year. The school was damaged by fire in February 1888, reopening the following September.

Many new board schools were built between 1872 (following the 1872 Education (Scotland) Act) and 1919 (when school boards were abolished). Whilst Lanark Grammar School is not a rare building type its design, setting and relative early date for a Board School is of special interest. The building has a significant amount of distinguishing architectural detailing which sets it apart from early Board Schools, especially from those found in towns which were often smaller and plainer than the new schools being built in Scotland's cities.
