Description

Tolbooth completed building 1723; funds presented in 1741
to replace original cupola with a steeple. Alterations and
additions by David Bryce, 1867. All built of red ashlar,
rusticated at ground to impost level, 3-bay main elevation
looking S along High Street with square tower, central
round-arched doorway. Venetian opening above containing
statue in alcoved centre; louvred set-back octagon supports
spire; outer bays originally single storey, altered and
raised by Bryce with windows set in ground floor arches,
balustraded over 1st and lions couchant at angles.
Body of Tolbooth more than doubled in depth by Bryce,
bull-faced, gabled and slate-roofed rear (N) range set
forward from original flanks with 1st floor Venetian windows
containing leaded glass representations of Bruce and
Wallace; eagle roof finials.
Pair swagged cast-iron Adamesque lamp brackets beside door
presumably also by Bryce
