John Adam 1761-2, built for the Earl of Hopetoun. Substantial
3 storey, 5 bay house set back from street behind entrance
court enclosed by single-storey quadrant wings culminating in
low 2-storey pavilions. Built of neatly graded coursers with
ashlar dressings. Central entrance with cavetto splayed
reveals engaged Roman Doric columned doorpiece with
ball-finials. All windows in moulded architraves with 12-pane
sashes. Band course above ground floor, eaves course and
cornice. Piended platformed roof with 2 tall banded ashlar
stacks. Dormer to south. Full height semi-circular bows to
outer bays at rear. Pavilions with semi-elliptical carriage
arches (north end infilled and two windows inserted) and
small windows above. Slated roofs little of interest
surviving internally apart from central stair.
