Description

Late 18th century house by Alexander Stevens. Two-storey, symmetrical three-bay street elevation with classical details. Neat coursers with polished ashlar dressings and outer pilasters with Griffin finials.

Central bowed entrance portico with Roman Doric columns supporting entablature and blocking course. Central door and two narrow windows recessed behind columns, bipartite window above in raised, pilastered and pedimented wallhead gable. Bipartite windows in outer bays with reeded architraves and consoled hoods. First floor bipartite windows breaking through cornice given present form, circa 1930.

Piended, platformed slated roof. Three bay side walls harled. Ball finials on raised wallhead gablet dormers.

Statement of Interest

Alexander Stevens (1730-1796), engineer and bridge builder, may have begun building the house in 1785. He died in 1796 and his son, Alexander Stevens, an architect, is understood to have continued the house, possibly adding the first floor around 1811. The latter also built Raehills in Johnstonebridge which has some of the same detailing. The Larch-Hill Chalybeate Well is in grounds.

Statutory address and listed building record revised in 2019. Previously listed as 'Victoria Place Larch-Hill House'.
