Description

Earlier 19th century. 3-storey and attic, 3-bay, classical tenement in irregular terrace with shop at ground, painted lined render to front, harled to side and rear, 1st floor cill bank course, eaves cornice.

E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: pend entrance to right at ground, pilaster-flanked shopfront to left, door to centre, plate glass window to left, corniced entablature, symmetrical 1st and 2nd floors, corniced windows at 1st floor, 2 piended dormers above.

W ELEVATION: pend entrance to left at ground, 2-storey wing extending W to right, window to left at 1st floor, 2 bays at 2nd floor, bipartite dormer to right.

N ELEVATION: adjoining 62 High Street at ground and 1st floor to left, harled gable end above. Nos 62 and 64 to right in close; 2-storey, squared and snecked sandstone, porch to left, pilastered doorpiece, panelled door, timber-mullioned bipartite to centre at ground, door to right, shallow rectangular fanlight, glazed panels in door, window to left and timber-mullioned bipartite to right at 1st floor.

S ELEVATION: adjoining 70/72 High Street to right. Nos 64 and 66 to left, harled, window and timber-mullioned bipartite to right at 1st, single storey addition abutting to right at ground, window at ground and 1st floor to extreme left.

12-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof; stone skews; harled gablehead stack to N, brick gablehead stack toS.

INTERIOR: upper storeys (not seen 1997) reached via spiral stone staircase and pilastered entrance in close.

Statement of Interest

The "Servite House" complex of new and restored properties adjoins No 66 in close and extends to the west.
