Description

Earlier 19th century, 3-storey and attic, 4-bay, L-plan, classical tenement with shops at ground in irregular terrace. Sandstone ashlar to E and S elevations. Squared rubble to rear and gable end. Cornice above ground, 1st and 2nd floor cill band course, eaves cornice and blocking course, architraved margins.

E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: pend entrance to centre at ground, door to left and blocked door to right in pend. 19th century shopfront to right; 3 bays, entrance to centre, 2-leaf panelled doors, flanking plate glass windows, low stall risers. Mid 20th century shopfront to left; 3 bays, entrance to centre, flanking plate glass windows, polished black granite surround. 1st and 2nd floors symmetrical, corniced heads to windows at 1st floor. 2 canted dormers.

W ELEVATION: 2 bays to right; rendered at ground and 1st floor, pend entrance to left, stone dog-leg forestair to right with cast-iron railings leading to pilastered and corniced doorpiece above pend, 2-pane rectangular fanlight and panelled door. Window at 2nd floor centred above, window at half-landing, 1st and 2nd floors to right, door beneath stairs. W wing adjoining to left.

S ELEVATION: 3-bay W wing in close; panelled door to centre, 2-pane rectangular fanlight, window at 1st and 2nd floors centred above, window at ground, 1st and 2nd floors to left, blocked window at ground to right, door at 1st floor opening onto forestair, rectangular fanlight, window at 2nd floor above. Gable end of front block; blank, fireplace niches exposed, 186 and 188 High Street adjoining to left.

N ELEVATION: 3-bay W wing overlooking, and gable end of front blocking adjoining 176-178 High Street.

8- and 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate on double pitched roof to front block, and pitched roof to W wing. Broad, corniced gablehead stacks to N and S, brick wallhead stack above re-entrant angle to W and to N.

INTERIOR: not seen 1997.
