Description

Circa 1880. Single storey 3-bay gabled lodge with overhanging eaves and large modern extension to rear. Whinstone with bull-faced cream sandstone dressings; dry-dash extension with slate-hung 1st floor. Long and short dressings; chamfered arrises; eaves supported on pierced timber brackets.

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: advanced gabled porch at centre with boarded door, shouldered plate glass fanlight and finial; gabled bay to left with bipartite window and framed blind square plaque in gablehead; right bay with bipartite window breaking eaves with gabled dormerhead. Gables with cross bracing; various Velux windows.

W (ROAD) ELEVATION: gabled with projecting apex stack and window to right; extension set back to left.

E ELEVATION: blank gable with apex stack; extension set back to right with door at ground.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: dominated by modern extension projecting at centre.

Timber sash and case plate glass windows to original building; extension with timber windows at ground and velux windows at 1st floor. Grey slates; coped sandstone apex stacks (octagonal can to E).

GATEPIERS AND BOUNDARY WALL: square stop-chamfered ashlar gatepiers with flattened pyramidal caps; low rubble quadrant wall with saddleback ashlar coping survives to N (picket fence to S).

Statement of Interest

There is a lodge in this position shown on the 1st edition OS map 1856. Venlaw Castle Hotel is listed separately in Peebles Parish and the lodge is listed for group value.
