Description

1808. 2-storey and basement 5-bay originally L-plan classical hotel recessed from street with bow-ended projection and large modern addition to rear. Squared and snecked whinstone rubble (whitewashed to front) with grey sandstone droved ashlar dressings (painted black to front). Base course concealing basement windows; banded cill course at ground floor; raised quoins and eaves band.

N (FRONT) ELEVATION: slightly projecting centre bay with doorway at ground floor accessed by steps, narrow sidelights framed by shallow paired pilasters, stained glass fanlight with Peebles'arms and large projecting part suspended metal canopy with ornamantal metal brackets and glazed panel, inscribed 'Tontine Hotel'; tripartite window with narrow blank sidelights at 1st floor; blocking course bearing tablet above. Regular fenestration to flanking bays. 2 bipartite gabled dormer and modern boxdormer to centre. Single bay later lower addition to

outer right.

S (REAR) ELEVATION: full-height bow-ended projection to right with tall round-arched windows with intetsecting astragals at 1st floor. Later additions infilling to right, rubble at ground, brick at 1st floor. Large modern addition with glazed link into W wall.

12-pane timber sash and case windows. Slate roof. 2 apex stacks.

INTERIOR: good interior, most notably bow-fronted former ballroom at 1st floor (now dining room) with Adam-style fireplace and plasterwork to coved ceiling, gallery with ornamantal iron railings and slender columns.

Statement of Interest

The hotel cost ?4030 and was named after the method of private subscription with which it was built with. Under a Tontine agreement, the last survivor of the subscribers inherits the property.
