Description

Late 19th century. 2-storey with raised basement to rear 3-bay Queen Anne villa with Scottish 17th century details on steeply sloping S facing site; now with separate basement flat (Rathacraig). Whinstone with red sandstone ashlar dressings; rounded arrises.

N (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: symmetrical. Semicircular flat-roofed corniced bay at centre; pedimented roll-moulded doorway with 2-leaf panelled door; HYNDLEA carved in frieze; pair of windows at 1st floor. Flanking bays with paired windows at ground, windows at 1st floor breaking eaves with segmental-pedimented dormerheads.

E ELEVATION: 2-bay, gabled. Door to right at ground with platt oversailing basement area; window at 1st floor. Flat-roofed semi-circular bay to basement and ground floors to left; cornice

and wrought-iron railing as balcony to window above. Apex stack.

S ELEVATION: irregular. Full-height canted window to left with corbel course above basement; centre bay with paired stair windows to upper floor and basement door; right bay with 2 windows at basement, bipartite window at ground, single window at 1st floor breaking eaves with pedimented gablehead.

W ELEVATION: gabled. Window to basement at left; 2 windows at 1st floor. Apex stack.

Timber sash and case windows; 6-pane upper sashes, 2-pane lower. Grey slates; terracotta ridge tilles; ashlar-coped skews; scrolled skewputts; corniced ashlar dressed stacks; bulbous terracotta cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1994.

BOUNDARY WALLS AND RAILINGS: rubble boundary wall. Cast-iron spearhead railings to front basement area on saddleback ashlar base.

Statement of Interest

Former motor house to E now converted to dwelling (Morven).
