Description

Circa 1820. Symmetrical 2-storey and dormerless attic, 3-bay classical house with W main garden front and regular E rear elevation. Cherry-pointed (galletted) squared tooled rubble frontage with tooled and polished contrasting sandstone ashlar dressings; channelled, rusticated quoins; rubble return gables and rear elevation. Corniced and pilastered doorpiece with paterae in outer architrave panels. Modern glazed double-leaf doors and fanlight. Bandcourse links 1st floor windows as cill course; ashlar quoins; blocked and corniced

wallhead; flat skews; deep panelled and corniced end stacks; dark pottery ridge; slate roof.

REAR ELEVATION: symmetrical 2-storey, 3-bay rear elevation with centre door; flanking single storey rubble service wings, at right probably of earlier build. Single centre attic light in each return gable.

12-pane glazing in 1st floor windows, front elevation, and rear ground floor windows; 16-pane glazing in front ground floor windows and rear lst floor fenestration; all timber sash and case.

INTERIOR: wide entrance/stair hall, plain staircase, decorative plaster ceiling; decorative plaster cornices to some lst floor rooms; panelled doors and moulded door jambs with angle paterae serving principal rooms; deep moulded skirting boards.

GARDEN WALLS AND GATEPIERS: high rubble garden walls enclose house and garden. Lower short section fronting Seafield Terrace with slender cast-iron railings, the stiffeners capped with urn finials. Plain square tooled rubble gatepiers flank entrance, with stepped caps

supporting ball finials. Finials decorated with stylised carved leaves and encircling foliated swag, each supported by attenuated splayed base.

Statement of Interest

Hermiston does not appear on 1817 plan of Portsoy except the N wing of the rear court which may incorporate the cottage built on site by 1817 but after 1805.
