Description

Mainly 19th century but probably incorporating earlier work.
Small harbour, roughly triangular on plan enclosed at E by
curved pier and W by long pier projecting seaward and
terminated by small circular concrete beacon. Rubble, tooled
rubble dressings, some concrete. Seaward side of each pier
raised to form seawall portecting quayside.

Statement of Interest

Rosehearty became a busy fishing port in the early 19th

century. The depth of water in the harbour (9' during neap

tides, 14' during spring tides) offered good anchorage on an

exposed coastline. After it was discovered in 1810 that

harbour dues were the right of the feuer rather than the

heritor, this income grew and was an important element in the

prosperity of the burgh.

Extensive additional, but less sheltered, anchorage was

available just east of the harbour in Port Rae; this is not

included in listing.

A modern swimming pool projects into the harbour, contained

within concrete walling. This swimming pool and its

containing walls are not included in listing.
