Description

Mid 19th century. Neilson & Co, Glasgow. Black painted cast iron tiered fountain set on octagonal stone base with putto figure at apex. Central decorated, tapered, fluted column with wide, shallow basin above. Surmounted by similar, with smaller basin. Figure of small putto with floral trumpet above. Set in low octagonal stone basin with 4 fish head water spouts.

Statement of Interest

This is the only known remaining structure to come from the foundry of Neilson and Co, the family Company of James Beaumont Neilson. The fountain is a good example of its type which adds significantly to the streetscape of the area. The mixture of the statue, tiered basins and surrounding spouts ensure that the decorative nature of the flowing water is shown to advantage.

James Beaumont Neilson invented the hot blast oven in 1828.
